I've got an SE soapbar, which comes stock with PRS designed P90's (single coil), but I'm pretty sure the PRS SE Custom 24 comes with PRS. I had upgraded the pickups in my PRS SE Custom, but now I plan to sell Unfortunately, I can't find a wiring diagram for the PRS SE pickups. But you can still find them used, all over ebay (and used is definitely the best way to go - you can get one dirt cheap). I don't think PRS makes the mahogany model anymore - just the Korina. I'd probably do the same thing - replace tuners, and pickup. I have thought about picking one up though, just because they are so damn light.
And tonally I'm not sure what you'd get with a P-90. It is a similar wood to mahogany, but lighter in weight and color. So I felt like I got plenty of Junior mojo, at a bargain price. I never missed the tone control much, because I'd typically run it wide open, anyway. Very nice neck with well dressed frets, and lots of attention ot detail on a guitar in that price range. I changed the tuners and pickup (to a custom hand wound P-90 with Alnico III mags), and I thought it sounded great. Pretty close tonally, though.Īs far as the SE goes, I think it offers tremendous bang for the buck. But not EXACTLY, because the SE, Junior, et al, have their single pickup mounted not quite as far back on the body, as a similar instrument (like a LP Special), with a neck and a bridge p'up. A single P-90 Junior type instrument, is going to sound similar to a 2 P-90 guitar, being played on the bridge position p'up. I love the sound of P-90's, and was trying to approximate the Junior vibe, with the PRS. I've owned several P-90 equipped instruments - one being an orignal '56 LP Junior, and another being a recent model mahogany SE One in transparent cherry.
